Abstract Pressure trace measurements and small angle X-ray scattering measurements were combined to measure the vapor-liquid nucleation rates of EtOH/H2O mixtures. By using two supersonic Laval nozzles with different expansion rates, nucleation rates were varied under isothermal conditions. Thus, the sizes, compositions, and excess energies of the critical clusters could be determined. These results in turn yield a relationship between the surface energy and the composition of the critical clusters.
