Abstract We show that spark synthesis of mixed NPs allows a virtually unlimited number of combinations. Oscillating sparks are produced, in which cathode and anode are periodically exchanged with a frequency of around 10 MHz during a discharge time in the order of 1 µs. Nanoparticulate alloys of materials immiscible in the bulk can be produced this way. We show that the mean composition can be tuned through the spark characteristics and that a model predicts the broadness of the distribution.
