Abstract Total ozone unit (TOU) is one of the main payloads on FY-3A/B/C satellites and the first instrument for daily global coverage of total ozone monitoring in China. They have been in-orbit for almost nine years from May 2008. Total ozone is retrieved by ultraviolet radiance to observe global ozone distribution and its variation. Then, the absorbing aerosol index (AAI) is retrieved using 331 nm and 360 nm in 2013. It is used for atmospheric pollution observation of China, such as smog, dust storm, and biomass burning etc. In this paper, the quality and application of TOU data is shown and discussed, which includes L1B radiance, total zone, and AAI. Besides, the studying direction of future instruments is discussed.
