Abstract
I’m Hema and I graduated with a PhD in the field of Environmental Engineering from the top engineering institute of India, IIT Madras, in the year of 2017. My PhD dissertation was about the offline characterization of bioaerosols using DNA analyses to understand their diversity and impacts on health and climate. So, PhD was my gateway to the world of aerosols and bioaerosols. Besides gaining a significant knowledge about bioaerosols, I was able to publish some first ever reports on bioaerosols for Indian region in reputed journals like PLoS One, Scientific reports etc. I started my post-doc with Prof. Suresh Dhaniyala and Prof. Thomas Holsen last year March. As a post-doc, I first worked on passive samplers and then I started working with two grad students on two independent projects, (a) aerosol in medicine and material synthesis, and (b) low cost bioaerosol sampler development. I also work on low cost sensors to understand the air quality with a broader goal to understand aerosol-bioaerosol relationship at indoor-outdoor sites. My research interests are air quality assessment for health impacts, bioaerosol impact on human health and agriculture, and aerosol material synthesis. Besides research, I enjoy writing and this keep me going. I would love to work on areas such aerosol in threat detection etc. that would be useful to governmental organizations and industries, but I don’t restrict myself to only this area.
